Keep your Property Running Smooth

SERVPRO of East Independence/Blue Springs has what it takes to restore a residential or commercial space after fire, water, mold, or smoke damage. Although we tend to focus on the interior of a space, we also know it is very important to pay attention to the exterior of your property.

With the colder seasons approaching and the possibility of snow, faulty areas in your home may allow for water to enter, leading to damage. Here are some things around the exterior of your home that should be checked regularly to keep your space running at its highest potential:

  • Clean out your gutters so rain can easily flow through them and drain away from the roof. Gutters filled with leaves, sticks and other debris can become damaged or not work as well.
  • Check that your gutter’s downspouts are properly attached to allow water to drain away from the home. A detached or broken spout can lead to water flooding outside.
  • Make sure the sump pumps in your home are operational and have a working battery. An unexpected, failed sump pump may lead to a slew of future problems.
  • Check that garden hoses are properly attached to prevent water from draining into piping.
  • See if the caulking on your windows needs repair. A ripped seal in the window may allow water to enter the home.

SERVPRO Team with Client Every step of the way SERVPRO will be there for our clients.

First Impressions:

From the moment you call our local SERVPRO team in regards to an incident you have experienced, you will be greeted by one of our team members who are available 24/7. They will ensure you that we will be on the job site in under 4 hours. We recognize that oftentimes customers don’t think about the services we offer until they need our assistance. Our goal is to be there for our clients from the moment that they call till the moment that they can take their first breath of relief. Our team will gather documentation and do a loss assessment report.  We do this to provide top-notch communication and documentation to our clients.

Gathering Documentation

Once the Project Manager comes and evaluates the job site they will sit down with the client to make the Customer Briefing checklist. A checklist that will go into deep detail on the course of action to reassure the client that they are in good hands. Keep in mind that our team will never provide the client with unrealistic expectations because we will never mislead our clients. In fact, the Project Manager will sit down with the client and make a realistic timeline so that both the PM and client are on the same page.

Loss Assessment Report

The Loss Assessment Report is one of the most important documents that include some critical information about the restoration activities. This report includes:

  • Identification and evaluation of health concerns and safety hazards.
  • Determination of the job scope
  • Evaluation of inventories and/or content items
  • Documentation of pre-existing conditions not related to the current loss
  • And more

SERVPRO Way

Here at SERVPRO, our main goal is to be there for our clients in their time of need. We provide top-notch documentation that takes the stress away from our clients and provides clear insight for insurance adjusters. What is a Containment?

10/29/2021 (Permalink)

A man laying down tape on a door frame Building containments help complete work in a timely manner so that we can bring back the property to preloss conditions.

Today we are going to learn about containments. What are they and why are they used? Both those questions will be answered. Wait until the end to see the completed containment.

To make a containment, two strips of painter’s tape are placed around the entire edge of the door frame. One stripe of double-sided tape is then placed on top. After the double-sided tape is applied, the plastic is strategically is placed on top and cut to fit the frame. Depending on if the contained space needs to be re-entered, then a zipper will be placed for easy access to the room

A containment is set on a fire, reconstruction, water, or mold as a way to keep the affected area enclosed. It is essentially a barrier.  It also can speed up the restoration process, encapsulating the airflow from air movers strictly to the damaged room.

For a fire, the containment keeps the non-damaged area from smoke exposure. For a water job, it can help dry a specific area faster with a smaller area to dry. For demolition and reconstruction, it prevents dust and debris from getting into certain areas.

Truthfully, knowledge is power. We aim to give our team members and anyone who is open to learning the option to continue to learn. Especially for insurance agents, we offer free Continuing Education classes as a way to receive credit. To find out more about the classes we offer, call our office or local marketing representative. Additionally, you can contact your local marketing representative to learn tips and tricks for your home or business. Our team can act as a resource and as a wealth of knowledge.

Our team is committed to providing classes to our team members to ensure that the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) standard is met and that we continue to learn the best practices to take care of your home or business. Again, knowledge is power.

How to Remove Nasty Odors

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Stinking and sometimes repugnant, the smells we can encounter are numerous and great. Whether it's from water damage, fire damage, or pets, SERVPRO knows the importance of getting a home back to preloss conditions and smelling like home again. To minimize and eliminate odors, SERVPRO utilizes Ozone Generators and Hydroxyl Generators as part of the deodorization process. Ozone gas aids in eliminating odors, especially organic odors. The Ozone Generator turns O2 to O3, changing the properties of the odor. Ozone is paired with a fan to circulate the air since it is corrosive. All plants and animals must be removed from the vicinity while the machine is running. This generator will usually be utilized for up to 24- 72 hours to get rid of any odors. After usage, the smell of ozone will dissipate within 10 to 15 minutes Our Hydroxyl generator is electrolyte equipment that generates Negative Radicals that are unsaturated molecules that also work to remove odors from an area. These odor eliminators are just a piece of the process, but they are essential to getting those tough odors out of the home.

The Difference Between Mold and Mildew

9/14/2021 (Permalink)

The Terms Mold and Mildew are used interchangeably. They are both distinct but different species in the fungi family.

Mildew presents as a down and powdery substance and tends to be flat. It is a parasite that lives off living plants. Thus, to have an active mildew infestation in a building requires that there are living plants in the building. Because mildew requires a living host to grow, mildew is seldom a factor in indoor microbial contamination.

Mold tends to have a higher profile and can even become fuzzy. Mold is one of nature’s chief decomposition mechanisms. Molds that decay dead organic matter that was once alive, such as trees leaves, cotton, leather, wool, etc. Outdoors, molds are part of the natural environment by breaking down organic matter such as toppled trees, fallen leaves, and dead animals. The problem with mold is that it does not know the difference between a dead tree in the forest and a 2x4 wall stud in a home. In the case of mold or mildew, our team of trained professionals can assist you to make it “Like it never even happened.”
